My mom and I use to watch all the home shows! Debbie Travis, Candice Olsen, Sarah Richardson and Bob Villa…we devoured it all! In my mind, that was just a dream job and not a reality for me. After university and working in publishing for a few years, I realized I needed something that was more hands-on, creative and social. I learned how to style hair and absolutely love that part of my career, but I needed another creative outlet. I enrolled in an interior design class and quickly rediscovered my passion! Posy House Styling Co. was born.
what inspires you?
My design choices are usually inspired by nature, my surroundings, and what I see on social media and television. Lifestyle considerations are so important as well. Furniture and finishes need to be aesthetically pleasing, yes - but with a young family, they also have to be functional and durable! Our modern farmhouse definitely has an organic feel. We have plants in almost every room. I love natural colours, textures and finishes. I absolutely love clean lines, but I gravitate towards patina and warmth. It’s a great mix of timeless finishes that embraces an owner's personality.
my favourite room in the house
My favourite room is the great room/kitchen. It’s a big, open space that family and guests can flow in and out easily to feel involved in the action. I love all the contrast and texture in the space, the brightness, the fun lighting and the classic but streamlined finishes. It’s comfortable and comforting to me, and I hope inviting to guests. The sunny, south-facing windows mean that our plants are happy there too!
what colour are you?
I’m kind of an undecorated decorator. I love a good colour story in other homes, but in my own space, I really tend to go neutral with bits of natural colours here and there. I use greenery for pops of life. Sometimes, just a warm leather and cool slate can be enough colour. Even simple linens and woolly textures can bring different tones together in a striking way. I sometimes will bring in leaf green, or brighter golds/ rusts contrasted with Navy, for my “pops” of colour.
what's your vibe?
We enjoy being outside here so much! It was hard making the decision to leave our previous (amazing) neighborhood, but one of the main reasons we chose to move was so that we could have more outdoor leisure space. Here, we swam almost every day this season, and frequently entertained on the covered patio. It’s brought us a lot of joy! We are a pretty laid-back family, so the peaceful country atmosphere has been really lovely. Aside from the spotty technology available out here, Aberfoyle has been great to us! Our location is ideal in that we are only 6 mins from Guelph, but we are also so close to the 401! This makes it super simple for me to go on sourcing adventures and also cuts my husband’s commute in half. The kids get picked up at the end of the driveway and have about a 2 min drive to an awesome community school.
